This medallion is adorned with an original Bear design combining Celtic and Pictish style elements.
A mighty spirit, the Bear has been revered from the earliest times for its embodiment of strength, motherhood, protective power, and deep wisdom. Bear divinities, typically Goddesses, were known known among the Celtic Gauls and Britons under the names Artio, Artaius, and Andarta, as Artemis was a Bear Goddess among the Hellenic peoples. Bears were also held by some ancient societies as a symbol of kingship and divine power, reflected in the legendary King Arthur (Arto, the root in Celtic languages for bear). Bears have been called upon by warriors for ferocity and unstoppable strength in battle. The berserkrs of old Norse tradition famously invoked the Bear’s ferocity in a shamanic trance or battle rage that was said to make them nearly invincible, and may have worn bear pelts as part of their armor. Due to its seasonal life pattern and habit of hibernation in deep caves through the dark of winter, the Bear has also long been associated with dreaming, deep wisdom, the cave as womb, and the initiatory mysteries of darkness and awakening.
You can wear or display this mighty creature to align yourself with the deep and primordial power of the Bear, and to honor these ancient traditions.
Talisman is etched in 18-gauge copper, 1.5″ in diameter.
Our copper talismans are hand etched in small runs with careful attention. Talismans are individually hand-detailed, so each pendant is slightly different and unique. We hang them on leather cord hand-woven into a Celtic-style knotwork ornament. The artist, Morpheus, personally consecrates all the talismans on her home altar.
